Pdf Summary
The American Psychiatric Association's webinar, titled "Fostering Organizational Change to Promote Uptake of Evidence-Based Practices," offered insights into promoting the adoption of evidence-based practices in psychiatric care. The session, which was accredited for continuing education credits, featured presenters Alison B. Hamilton, PhD, MPH, and Amy N. Cohen, PhD, both from UCLA's Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Science, and focused on quality improvement (QI) methodologies within healthcare organizations.

The webinar emphasized the importance of systematic approaches for quality enhancement, drawing from industrial quality management techniques such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), Total Quality Management (TQM), and Lean Six Sigma. Key discussions included identifying QI priorities, structuring QI projects, and integrating evidence-based quality improvement (EBQI) practices that balance clinical guidelines with tailored organizational changes.

Significant attention was given to the "Getting to Outcomes" model, which outlines steps for planning, delivering, evaluating, and sustaining quality improvement initiatives. Among the suggested QI tools were Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles, flowcharts, and various data interpretation techniques to measure and validate project success. The presenters highlighted the importance of leadership support, stakeholder engagement, and the creation of interdisciplinary teams in fostering effective QI.

The webinar also reviewed a case study, the Enhancing Quality of Care in Psychosis (EQUIP) study, which aimed to improve outcomes for patients with serious mental illness (SMI) through evidence-based interventions like supported employment and wellness programs. The study's outcomes showed improvements in service utilization and employment rates among intervention participants.

To support ongoing learning and development in evidence-based practices, the webinar offered resources for accessing slides, Q&A engagement, and registration for SMI Adviser’s follow-up sessions. Participants were informed about upcoming webinars and resources for continuous professional development, including claiming CME credits through evaluations.
