Overview

Description 

This session will describe and explore the outsized yet often underappreciated role that social injustice plays in the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illnesses. It will review relevant concepts including the social determinants of mental health, mental health inequities, and structural racism. Then there will be discussion of the interplay among societal systems, population mental health, and inequities in risk for mental illness and criminal Justice system involvement - with a particular focus on populations with SMI and/or ID who have been found incompetent to proceed. Finally, there will be a call to action and discussion regarding the advancement of mental health equity through individual practice, collective action, and systemic reform.

At the completion of the activity, participants will: 

Identify the relevance of social justice in mental health in order to re-examine mental health and illness in the context of the mental health and criminal-legal interface.  

Discuss the impact of social hierarchies on diagnostic processes and classifications in order to better evaluate and treat patients from marginalized communities over-represented in criminal proceedings.  

Critically examine individual, collective and systemic opportunities for advancing social justice and promoting mental health equity.

How to Earn Credit 

After completing the evaluation, participants will have the opportunity to claim their hours of participation and download the appropriate certificate. Physicians may obtain an official CME certificate, other healthcare professionals may receive a CE certificate (as applicable), and all other attendees may generate a certificate of participation. Each certificate will reflect the event date and total hours earned.

As a Jointly Accredited Organization, American Psychiatric Association (APA) is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. APA maintains responsibility for this course. Social workers completing this course receive up to 1.00 cultural competency, diversity and social justice continuing education credits.
