Description
This presentation will review cannabis epidemiology, medical uses as well as conditions for which cannabis use has not been shown to be beneficial, addiction potential with an emphasis on vulnerable populations including adolescents and risks in pregnancy and children exposed to cannabis during fetal development, and accumulating evidence for adverse mental health effects of cannabis use. Challenges of cannabis use in the justice population with a focus on competency restoration will be discussed.

At the completion of the activity, participants will:
Participants will be able to differentiate medical conditions for which cannabis products may be useful in treatment and those for which there is not scientific evidence to support its use.
Participants will be able to evaluate the impact of cannabis use disorder on the mental health conditions of their patients and incorporate that understanding into treatment approaches for co-occurring disorders.
Participants will be able to employ an understanding of the potential impact of cannabis use on approaches to competency restoration in the justice population.

- Elinore McCance-Katz, M.D., Ph.D., is a board-certified psychiatrist and addiction psychiatrist who served as the first Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use and led the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) from 2017–2021. A nationally recognized clinician, researcher, and educator with more than 30 years of experience, she is currently a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University and continues her work in forensic addiction psychiatry at Eleanor Slater Hospital. Dr. McCance-Katz has published extensively on substance use disorders, clinical pharmacology, and HIV care, and has contributed to national and international initiatives advancing evidence-based addiction treatment and public health policy.
